Since 1993, Montreal’s Marchés Publics have managed the Atwater, Jean-Talon, and Maisonneuve public markets along with six smaller neighbourhood markets and three solidarity markets. Offering local and seasonal produce to Montrealers, the markets are one of the city’s best offerings.
The goal of this project was to create a product line of canned tomato products for Montreal’s Marchés Publics. The line extension had to be branded with the market's logo and be cohesive with actual products sold at their shops.
Using a form as utilitarian and simple as a tin can, the visuals were developed to be equally unpretentious. The goal was to create a design that is easily recognizable and clearly depicts the contents of each can. The chosen type mimics the visuals by being clean, bold, and direct. A secondary promotional reusable bag was also developed.
Capitalism manipulates us into thinking that buying a product will also buy us a lifestyle, a dream, and a brand-new start. That was not the approach taken with this project. I’m selling you tomatoes. They are just tomatoes!
